Between its Spanish-speaking neighbors and the breezy Caribbean to the east, Central America's youngest nation offers a cultural fusion, including Maya, Mestizo, Garifuna, Creole, Mennonite and more. It is home to verdant jungles, from the Maya Mountains in the southwest, to the Shipstern Nature Reserve in the northeast.

Fascinating ancient ruins act as evidence of the greater Maya Kingdom that once lived there, while miles of white-sand beaches cover its shores, leading visitors to bright blue waters doted with numerous islands of different sizes.

The Belize Barrier Reef is the second longest in the world, and is home to more than 100 different kinds of coral and some 500 species of fish. This alluring underwater world is undoubtedly the top attraction in Belize. Snorkelers swim through translucent seas, admiring a kaleidoscope of coral, fish and turtles; divers go even deeper, exploring underwater caves and walls and the world-renowned Blue Hole.

The turquoise-blue waters are inviting even for those who choose to remain above the surface. Go Kayaking from one island to the other, or take advantage of the breeze that is perfect for windsurfing and sailing. Relax on the beach before feasting on delicious fresh fish, spiny-tailed lobster and other seafood, all locally sourced.

History

Belize is home to one of the world's most mysterious civilizations, the ancient Maya. The country has numerous archaeological sites that date to the Maya heyday, known as the Classic Period (AD 250–1000). Gigantic steps lead to the tops of tall stone temples, rewarding anyone who will climb their way to the top with 360-degree jungle views. If you are the adventurous type, you can climb and explore excavated tombs and examine intricate hieroglyphs, or descend deep into natural caves to see where the Maya kings performed rituals and made sacrifices to the gods of their underworld.
