Jamaica’s Rebel Beats

Nothing says “Jamaica” like listening to smooth reggae beats on a white sand beach. But Jamaican music is more than just a good beat—it has also been a vehicle for protest and change.  

Jamaica has a long history of slavery, beginning when Christopher Columbus claimed Jamaica for Spain in 1494. Plantations created wealth for Europe--but they decimated the native Arawak and Taino people who called Jamaica home since 4,000 B.C.E.  Slaves were brought from Africa to replace native slave laborers, many of whom died of diseases brought from Europe. When the British evicted the Spanish at Ocho Rios in 1655, many slaves fled to the mountains, establishing “Maroon” communities that maintained independence for generations.

This spirit of rebellion lives on in Jamaica’s music culture. Artists like Bob Marley drew Jamaicans from all walks of life to downtown lawns and nightclubs to ‘level the vibes,’ dancing to beats infused with messages about slavery, racial oppression, and poverty.  Get an overview of reggae’s subversive roots at the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, a must-see for any music lover.
