Cuisine

The gastronomy of Mozambique revolves around fresh seafood, stews, corn porridge (maize meal), rice, millet (a type of grain), and cassava. Meat dishes, such as steak and chicken are often accompanied by beans, cassava chips, cashew nuts, coconut, potatoes, and a variety of spices, including garlic and peppers. Enjoy fresh fish and other seafood, such as prawns, calamari, crab, lobster, and crayfish, all caught off the coast of Mozambique, and sold in restaurants or street stalls in the cities. There are also many seasonal fruit that are best enjoyed freshly picked, including scrumptious papayas and juicy pineapples. Finish off your meal with a choice of traditional desserts, including puddings made of a variety of fruits and rice, and fried balls of flour paste, most often accompanied by Mozambican tea.

 

Aside from the widely served coffee and tea, adults may enjoy locally brewed beer made from maize, a Mozambican staple food. The thick and sweet drink is often drunk from a common pot and shared by everyone present on special occasions.

History and culture

Mozambique was a Portuguese colony and then a Member State of Portugal, but became independent from Portugal in 1975 after the Mozambican War of Independence. The traditional way of life has been highly preserved, but varies from province to province, and the preserved African cultural heritage, can be experienced through art, music and food. With some of the best colonial era architecture and relics to be found on the continent, the unique local culture provides visitors with a series of experiences and precious memories.
