Top things to do in Santiago and surroundings

Originally founded in an area known as Jacagua, some seven kilometres from its present sight, Santiago′s history plays a significant role in the country′s past. Horse drawn carriages are ideal for exploring the city′s architectural wonders - both colonial and modern.

Places of interest include the “Plaza de la Cultura” (Cultural Plaza) and the Cathedral de Santiago Apóstol (Santiago Apostle Cathedral) built from 1868 to 1895 in neo-classic style and adorned with magnificent stained glass by Dominican artist Rincón Mora.

CIBAO
For a complete change of pace, the crisp air and alpine vegetation of the country's central mountain range is every bit as enthralling as the beaches. Two inland cities, Constanza and Jarabacoa glitter in their mountain setting. Framed against intensely blue skies, they offer a cooling respite from the coastal heat, and an awesome visual panorama. Easily reached by road from the North and South, they lie at the foot of majestic Pico Duarte, the Caribbean's highest point and a favourite of mountain climbers.

Our beautiful sunsets: Mother Nature is responsible for one of Santiago’s greatest spectacles. The best spots to catch a magnificent sunset are The War of Restoration Heroes Monument and Imbert Park.

Tomás Morel’s Folk Art Museum: Here you’ll be able to admire numerous items related to Dominican folklore and the everyday lifestyle in Santiago from the colonial period through to the 1960’s. It holds a wonderful collection of “pig masks” in representation of the city’s carnival.
