The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is located in the north-eastern part of Africa commonly known as the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by the Sudan in the west, Somalia and Djibouti in the east, Eritrea in the north and Kenya in the south. The country covers 1,112,000 square kilometres (472,000 sq. miles) making it roughly as large as France and Spain combined and is five times the size of the UK.

History

Africa has long been considered as the cradle of the human civilization. If one were to point our earliest origins, Ethiopia and its neighbors would be it. In particular, Ethiopia’s Afar Triangle yielded what became known as “Lucy,” a 3.2 million-year-old hominid that provided evidence that human ancestors walked on two feet. Further excavations revealed stone tools and other archaeological artifacts that point back to hominid settlement here as early as 4 million years ago.

Culture

One of the few African countries never to lose its independence, Ethiopia is home to more than 80 ethnic groups and a similar number of languages, the dominant religions being Christian and Muslim. One thing that unites all Ethiopians is the fact that they have never truly been colonised, although occupied by Mussolini's Fascists from 1935-1941. Consequently, Ethiopia has maintained what many refer to as its 'Ethiopianness', untainted by resonances of former colonial powers.

Ethiopia is also widely considered by botanists and historians as the home of the coffee shrub where it continues to grow wild in the highlands where Kaldi, the goat herd who according to legend discovered coffee, lived. While the café culture in Africa is starting to gain ground, a coffee ceremony in Ethiopia – which starts from arranging the ceremonial apparatus on a bed of long scented grass, then washing and roasting the red berries to grounding them, straining them, and serving them in little cups – is integral to their culture and to be invited into one is a true mark of Ethiopian hospitality.

Weather

The best time to visit Ethiopia is between January and March when clear, sunny days bring regular average daily temperatures of 25°C (77°F). The rainy season (April to September) brings soaring temperatures and humid conditions. August is the hottest (and wettest) month with temperatures reaching 45°C (113°F) regularly in the lowlands. October to December is an excellent time to visit Ethiopia as the countryside is lushly pretty after all the rain, there are plentiful sunny days and historical sites and monuments are not overrun with tourists.

Where to Go

From the north and running down the centre are the Abyssinian highlands. To the west of the chain the land drops to the grasslands of Sudan, to the east to the deserts of the Afar. South of Addis Ababa, the land is dominated by the Rift Valley Lakes. Riven by many deep and stupendous gorges, crowned by high and magnificent mountains neck-laced by a chain of lakes, water by majestic rivers, studded with burning deserts and great escarpments that plunge down from its highlands, Ethiopia remains a land of incomparable beauty.

But it is not simply the sheer scale of its physical beauty which characterises this land where the Blue Nile has carved one of the world's greatest and most awesome gorges. Its ancient and medieval monuments, its proud and colourful cultures, and its varied and often unique wildlife set it apart from all else. Ethiopia, dissected through its middle by the scar of the Great Rift Valley, is as old as time itself. It is a land claiming a history that goes back to the Old Testament.

It is the land of Sheba, and of Axum and Lalibela, of towering obelisks and the Ark of The Covenant - a land that was Christian before much of Europe and yet unknown to Europe for 1,000 years or more; a land that dwelt in limbo, forgotten by the world which it never forgot. From the vast spread of Lake Tana, source of the Blue Nile River in the northern highlands, through the relics of Axum, seat of Sheba's legendary empire, down along the scorching inferno of the Danakil Depression, one of the world's lowest points, and high amid the wonders of the Simien and Bale Mountains to the untouched, game-filled wildernesses of the remote southern grasslands.
