Madrid, the capital of Spain, is a cosmopolitan city where history and heritage merge seamlessly with the city's modern and convenient infrastructures. Art and culture play a key role in Madrid's cultural life with over 60 museums, and the city’s extensive and beautifully maintained parks and gardens make it one of greenest capitals in Europe.

But if there's one thing that sets Madrid apart, it must be its deep and infectious passion for life that finds its outlet in the friendly and open character of its inhabitants. Concerts, exhibitions, ballets, a select theatrical offering, the latest film releases, the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of the best Spanish and international gastronomy, to savour the charms of its bars and taverns... all these are just a few of the leisure options on offer in Madrid.

Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is a Mediterranean and cosmopolitan city with Roman remains, medieval quarters and the most beautiful examples of 20th century Modernism and avant-garde. It is no surprise that emblematic constructions by the Catalan architects Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Doménech i Montaner have been declared World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO.

Strolling around the streets of Barcelona will bring surprises at every turn. Pedestrian streets in the old quarter, green spaces, and a splendid seafront with a range of modern facilities are a reflection of its multi-faceted character.

While exploring Spain you can easily venture off the beaten track to discover small mediaeval towns, historic city centres steeped in history, lovely rural areas... Places with charm, with curious traditions, popular festivities and a delicious culinary fare. These are destinations where you can forget the stresses and strains of everyday life and immerse yourself in the pleasures of slow tourism.

Cuisine

In Spain, gastronomy is much, much more than simply sitting down to eat - it is a genuine way of life. Travelling around the country you'll be able to discover the exquisite and typical dishes of each area. The Spanish worship jamón and you won’t find it better anywhere in the world.  Do as the local do and head to one of the many cervecerías (small traditional bars serving food, wine, and beer) order a caña (small glass of beer) and enjoy some tapas.

The Mediterranean diet is the basis of Spain's food and many of its principles are present in the tastiest Spanish dishes. This diet is essentially based on fruit, vegetables, dried fruit, cereal, eggs, dairy products, fish and nuts. The wide range of top quality and inexpensive produce available all over Spain, make the food so special.  Remember that drinking wine moderately, as part of the Mediterranean diet, is a very healthy habit. Reds from the Rioja region are world famous.
