Greetings from the Flight Deck!

My name is Warren and I am an airline pilot for Emirates based in Dubai.

My job has taken me to countries all over the world. In my free time, I enjoy visiting exotic locations with idyllic beaches. I love helping my travel industry colleagues to plan their trips and find affordable options!

I recently stayed in the wonderful villas at The Vijitt Resort in Phuket, and at a key time when the quarantine for vaccinated travelers was abolished. I thought I would tell you my story so you can see how easy it is to now visit Phuket.

You can book the same deal I did from the link at the bottom of my blog if you work in the airline or travel agency business. Enjoy my Adventure Story and Happy Travels!

As an Airline Pilot who has traveled throughout the world during the pandemic, I was fully aware of what to expect when traveling abroad these days. With travel restrictions and entry requirements changing almost daily, planning your own time away can become quite challenging but my girlfriend and I were desperate to get away and to stay in a luxury hotel at a really good price... and we found it!

First, to how, where and why! I had hoped to travel home to see family in South Africa. As my leave approached, it was clear that this would be impossible. When looking at alternate options, I learned that Phuket, a place I had never visited, was re-opening to tourists and importantly WITHOUT the need for 14 days quarantine providing I had been double vaccinated and providing I flew in and out of Phuket itself. CLICK HERE for Covid protocols.

When browsing the hotel options available with Staff Travel Voyage, worldwide specialists in providing discounted accommodation for airline and travel agency employees, I came across The Vijitt Resort in the south of Phuket. I was immediately drawn in by the exquisite location of the luxurious, yet charming Thai-style villas nestled amongst a jungle of palm trees and lush greenery overlooking the ocean and the incredible price.

After that, I did not need much more convincing and went ahead with booking my holiday spot in paradise.

Arriving on only the second day of Phuket’s re-opening to tourists seemed a gamble due to the Covid-19 restrictions. After looking at what was on offer, I knew I needed to give it a try. From the moment I started the application for my certificate of entry, it was clear that it was something new. However, it was surprisingly straightforward. The Vijitt Resort was amazingly helpful. Thitiporn, one of the Managers at the resort was available at all hours and made life so much easier.

With the Resort's help in booking transportation and the required PCR tests, we obtained the Certificate of Entry within a couple of days. As easy as that. On arrival in Phuket, I expected the various checks to take time. I was happily surprised when I was through the airport and sitting in my transportation within 40 minutes. The experience at the airport was nothing but pleasant, with all the airport and immigration staff welcoming us with big smiles.

And with that, I was off to The Vijitt Resort. Thai music coming through the radio and a friendly, welcoming driver I was immediately feeling in holiday mode. In under an hour, I had arrived at the resort to be greeted by the welcoming Cream. The open-air reception area is impressive, with a very relaxing vibe to it.

Cream helpfully explained the next step in my journey, Villa Quarantine involving staying in the villa until results of the PCR test taken on arrival became available. The villas are impeccable and do more than justice to their surroundings. With beautiful wooden finishes and floor-to-ceiling glass with views across Chalong Bay, it was not difficult to remain in my room for the 10 hrs it took to receive my results.

My newfound isolation gave me a chance to relax in my new surroundings. The inviting green curry from the room service menu was delightful, just what I needed before a good night’s rest.

The arrival of the new day meant I could start to explore my surroundings. Looking out over the bay, I listened to the waves gently lapping the shore. There was a local fisherman out trawling and, the island felt awake and alive.

At breakfast, I was greeted by the graceful Maria and shown to my table. The resort offers a fantastic buffet that included locally sourced fruit, cereals, pastries, and full western breakfast or authentic Thai breakfast dishes. The chef at the egg station made an outstanding omelet and eggs benedict for us every morning.

I arrived at the reception where Cream had been busy organizing the hire of a scooter for me. Hiring the scooter gave me so much more personal freedom.  I was excited for the day ahead, navigating the island on this iconic vehicle. Not for everyone, scooters are just one of the numerous options the resort can arrange for transport around the island. Tong was waiting with my wheels. Having heard so much about Phuket and its islands, I was eager to explore. I was off and out of the gate in no time at all.

Those who have had the privilege to travel during these strange times will be well aware of how unique the experience can be and what I found beyond the gates of the resort was nothing different.

The streets were quiet, the restaurants and bars frequented by locals only. My thoughts were with the communities reliant on tourism and the devastating impact the pandemic has had on them.

For me, it was a humbling experience to see Phuket in a way that very few have been able to – living simply like a local.

My first stop was Nai Harn beach. In an idyllic setting, the only thing bluer than the sky was the ocean itself.  I was one of the only people on the beach and, it felt like I had the island to myself!  After a refreshing dip, I was back on the scooter and off to see more of what my surroundings had in store.

As I wound my way along the coast, I came across the Karon Viewpoint with its spectacular vista stretching out beyond Patong. It was impossible to continue my journey without spending some time admiring the view.

After an authentic seafood lunch in Patong, it was now late afternoon and time to head back.

The breathtaking infinity pool readily awaited my arrival. Sitting in the pool and looking out at the spectacular islands of Phuket, I was attentively looked after by Vivi and Jam. Their friendly nature made the Mojitos taste even better! That evening it was time to sample more of what the Vijitt chef had to offer.

The pad Thai did not disappoint and capped off what had been a fantastic first day.

The day to follow was remarkable. Visiting only a few days on from the island re-opening, I found some trips temporarily unavailable.  I was excited to be able to arrange a day of scuba diving with Aloha Diving. Scuba diving boats currently only depart from the Chalong Pier. Fortunately, the pier was Less than a 10-minute drive from the Vijitt Resort.

I met a wonderful Swiss couple, Simon and Alice, aboard their 60ft diving boat. Joined by a friend and two crew, we left the confines of the harbor and began our 1h 45 trip to the island of Koh Doc Mai. It was here that we spent the day exploring the reefs and seeing some of the most beautiful underwater scenery imaginable. I highly recommend that you look at Aloha Diving if that’s something that interests you.

My partner Kirsten arrived the following day and, I looked forward to exploring the islands with her.

Her villa quarantine lasted even less than mine, around 7 hrs, which meant we were able to share a lovely dinner in a villa situated on the hilltop.

Over the next few days, we excitedly drove all over the southern part of Phuket, taking in the sights, meeting amazing people, and enjoying the culinary delights Thailand has to offer.

We ventured on our scooters up to the Big Buddha viewpoint.

It was incredible to walk through such a sacred place with only a handful of people surrounding us. On top of the mountain, a heavy downpour added to the excitement.

We did not let the rain dampen our adventures. We were lucky enough to be able to purchase a pair of bright orange plastic raincoats for our scooter ride home and had a beautiful stop on the way down for coffee at the Million Chili Café. We did see numerous elephant trekking spots along this road and, Tiger Park Phuket was open for interactive animal experiences.

Dining at the hotel was superb, the Savoury restaurant was open for all meals and provided an alfresco poolside service. The menu was a good mix of authentic Thai cuisine as well as some western dishes.

Some evenings we also enjoyed a small street at the end of Rawai Beach, less than a 5 min ride from the resort, where we found six or seven quaint restaurants and cafes.

The food was so incredible we were reluctant to leave at the end of the night. We particularly enjoyed the fried shrimp in Tamarind sauce at Pratuang Restaurant and the duck and tamarind sauce at Naat Restaurant.

You honestly couldn’t go wrong picking anything on these menus.

Along the road back home, we found Chaba Massage Parlour, Phut, Sa, and their colleagues worked their magic in a humble yet inviting setting.

The authentic Thai massage by Sa was incredible. Phut was a talented expert in relieving tension using pressure points around the back and shoulder area with relaxing oil massage.

The V Spa at the Vijitt Resort was closed during our time there. It looked idyllic and it is on our list for when we return to the island.

No trip to Phuket would be complete without exploring Patong, Phuket's most popular resort.

We ambled along Bangla Road in the daytime as it was yet to open due to the local government's Covid restrictions. The locals were all hard at work, fixing signs and refreshing their venues in anticipation of being able to open shortly.

On the way back, we stumbled across a restaurant with the most impressive views across the three bays of Phuket, known as Sabai Corner. A great place to enjoy an early evening drink admiring the breathtaking views.

During our stay, we were impressed with the range of activities The Vijitt Resort offered. From workouts at the gym to kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

The resort's Thai cooking classes satisfy guests' thirst for an authentic experience. The villa experiences, roses on arrival, flower bubble baths, and floating breakfasts at the pool villas are a must.

We had the ultimate experience in the Vijitt One Bedroom Pool Villa for our final two nights at the resort. The villa had a separate lounge leading to the romantic king-size bedroom with glass doors that opened to the private pool.

Our highlight was the bathroom with a central soaking tub and outdoor shower filled with greenery overlooking the ocean from a small window.

Luxury surrounded us, from the comfortable bathrobes and cushioned slippers to the coffee machine and tranquil rain shower.

Reluctant to leave our charming private place in paradise, we enjoyed a delicious continental breakfast in the privacy of our pool with fresh fruit and coffee served on a floating basket.

We highly recommend this for anyone staying in a private pool villa as it is a unique experience.

Having stayed in three villa categories at The Vijitt Resort, they are all charming. The Deluxe Seaview Villas set on the hilltop, welcomed Kirsten for her first night while awaiting her test results. These villas had beautiful panoramic views enjoyed from the bed and an oversized bathtub with bamboo windows opening to views of the bay through the surrounding greenery.

Our Deluxe Beachfront Villa enjoyed the perfect location close to the beach, pool, and restaurant.
